10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects
Spring cleaning isn’t exciting for most of us. But it needs to be done. As the winter near an end and we start looking forward to spring, something inside of us tells us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and throwing away things we’ve hoarded over the winter months.
But who says spring cleaning is only for the inside of a house?
The exterior of your home could likely use some tidying up after a cold, dreary winter, too!
It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning
Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will drastically improve the curb appeal of your home in Charlotte, and, more importantly, will offer much-needed maintenance and care that will save money in years to come.
1. Gutter Cleaning
Spring is the optimal time to clean out your gutters, because a lot of leaves and debris collect in the fall and winter months. Pollen is at its highest in the spring, making a big mess in your gutters if they aren’t cleaned.
Plus, pests and critters are searching for places to build homes in spring, so having your gutters cleaned out will help to prevent an infestation in your home.
Gutter cleaning consists of cleaning the inside and outside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew, and rust stains and returning them to a like-new appearance.
2. Window Cleaning
Home window cleaning is necessary for spring cleaning. Ground floor windows won’t give you much of a problem, but second and third floor windows can be trickier to reach.
Cleaning windows by hand is a tiring job, and will need a lot of tools, not to mention going up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your home’s windows is the recommended way to get the panes and the outer frame clean.
3. Pressure Washing
You aren’t going to want clean gutters and clean windows on a dirty house. That means you are going to want to pressure wash your home too!
Pressure washing is quick, effective and affordable. You can clean your house, patio furniture, patios, wood and stone porches and walkways with very little effort. It will knock off dirt and mud so they will not stain your home, and you can also prevent the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.
4. Driveway Cleaning
Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a good cleaning may seem counter-productive because you’ll be driving on it, but actually, a clean, well-cared for driveway can increase the curb appeal of your home.
A professional pressure washing service can do wonders when it comes to driveway cleaning, whether it is concrete, asphalt, stone or another material. Also, think about adding a gravel or mulch border to your home’s driveway to really make it stand out!
5. Patio Cleaning
Your home’s patio probably gets the most use throughout the summer months, so it can be easy to forget about it in the winter when you aren’t doing a lot of outdoor entertaining, relaxing or grilling. Your patio can be in rough condition the first time you step onto it in the spring.
Detergent and water – and a little hard work – can sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if there are signs of mold or algae, you may need to think about a more serious option, like professional power washing, to ensure that friends and family can enjoy your patio all summer long.
6. Roof Cleaning
Mold and moss are typical roof problems in Charlotte. While you’re cleaning the exterior of your home, it is an excellent time to clean your home’s roof too, but you’ll need to use a different method than the one you use for the rest of your home’s exterior.
If you start to notice streaks on your home’s roof, algae is most likely the cause. Moss is fairly obvious, too. These particles cannot be scrubbed off shingles, nor can you power wash the roof of your home. Both of these methods will damage the shingles on your home’s roof.
The ideal method for roof cleaning is to spray the shingles with a half-bleach, half-water solution and then let it be. This will kill any organisms on your home’s roof without lowering its lifespan.
7. Tidy up the Front
The front of your home is probably what most people passing by see, so try to make the best impression you can for visitors, neighbors and for yourself! Coming home to a clean exterior will instantly improve your day, and will even encourage you to spend more time outdoors.
You can clean your porch with soap and water or a good power wash. Clean cobwebs and mud off of the front porch, and consider painting it a new color for a fresh look! Clean forgotten areas like the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.
8. Organize Garden Tools
You will soon be spending much more time outside, so spring is a great opportunity to organize everything you’ll need for outdoor work.
Yard tools as well as pool care equipment need to all have a specific place outside your home – somewhere that it is safe from weather and not in sight so it isn’t a constant eyesore to anyone. Spending the time to organize in the spring will allow you to enjoy the exterior of your home much more during the time of year that you are going to spend the most time outdoors.
9. Lawn Care & Landscaping
Your yard, trees and garden bushes make a major impact on the look of your home.
Remove weeds near the exterior of your flower beds and walkways and driveway, till up areas where you’ll be planting in the future and sweep off walkways. You can also spray pre-emergent weed poison to make yard maintenance easier on yourself throughout the next few months. Trim all the bushes too.
10. Clean the Grill
After sitting unused for several months, your gas or charcoal grill could need a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food from your grill are definitely unappetizing, but they can also make you and your family sick.
Wipe it down to remove leftover ash, then scrub the grates with a scrubber (so you do not leave behind particles that can sometimes get into food) and a detergent or degreaser.
